Sculpture seemed a natural progression to take after years of attending life drawing classes with a nude model. With sculpture I’m always looking to streamline the nude to get the essence of the pose. – Pamela Drewitt Smith, 2022
Order time frame: large sculptures 10 – 12 weeks, petite and framed 5 – 6 weeks
Note: Large sculptures can rest on a black granite base for an additional $250
Artist Statement
I inherited the artistic gene from my mother Helen and her mother Adele. My Grandma painted in oils and my mother studied at the National Art School in Darlinghurst, often running into the renowned Australian artist William Dobell.
I studied Graphic Design at Sydney College of the Arts and I seem to remember we spent a lot of afternoons with our painting and typography tutors at pubs! I met many like-minded spirits during my college years who have gone on to become lifelong friends. After studying I went on to build a career in art direction, illustration, book and magazine design, and record cover design in both Sydney and London. I worked on designs in every shape and size, from tiny scratch lottery tickets to enormous stage backdrops and school murals.
Around 15 years ago I started working in sculpture. It seemed a natural progression to take after years of attending life-drawing classes with a nude model – although it has been an ongoing challenge transitioning from working in 2D to 3D. Painting and sculpture are more intuitive and from the heart, but some design principles transpose across graphics, painting, and sculpture.
With sculpture I’m always looking to streamline the nude to get the essence of the pose. I deliberately discard the detail. My sculptures always start in clay and I first draw around the model from all sides to create a visual reference to refer back to. I try not to hold a preconceived idea in mind and let the clay bend to the model in front of me.
I keep returning to the human body in sculpture. It transcends cultures and timelines, it represents human emotion, and the subject matter is always relevant to its time and place in the world. I often revisit the mother and child theme, which probably has something to do with both my daughter Genevieve and my son Nicholas living in Europe.
