Jane Canfield
Jane Canfield

Upcoming Exhibition at Art2Muse Gallery 29 July – 11 August 2025

With more than a dozen solo exhibitions to date, Jane Canfield has works in many private collections in Australia and Internationally. Her landscapes are simplified and reduced, creating an impression of the landscape, and using colour as a driving force for the composition.

Jane paints primarily in oils and gouache, working off smaller studies produced en plein air and producing larger oil paintings in her studio. She is inspired by the landscape around her in the Central West of New South Wales.

Jane has held over twelve solo exhibitions and is in many private collections internationally. In 2014 she was collected into the prestigious Kedumba Drawing Award, and has been a finalist in many art prizes including the Paddington, NSW Parliament and Calleen Art Award.

As I write, I am looking out the window of my 1850’s Sandstone Inn, West of the Blue Mountains. It’s a view that must have changed a lot since those early days of Cobb & Co coaches and candlelight, but a constant is a rolling hillside with changing light, rain, and the seasons playing across the valley.

I hope my work reveals my love of life and tranquility that I often feel either at home in the studio, or if I am traveling, finding inspiration in the landscape in my 1974 VW Kombi ‘Dot’ with my little dogs.

I think I would currently class my work as ‘semi-abstracted tonalism’. I am always striving to simplify, but as Painter Nicolas de Staël once commented, still able to see the landscape that inspired it.

Jane was born in New Zealand (Christchurch) in 1967 and grew up in an artistic family, with her father, Tony Canfield a collected artist, inventor, motor mechanic, and designer. Every weekend they would go camping and her Dad would be sketching and painting. This love of working in nature has followed her to this day… and her love of classic cars…

Jane was accepted at an early age to Graphic Design College (Randwick TAFE, Sydney 1984) and spent 20 years working in the industry, but always drew and painted. She first came to notice for her strong lino-cut prints but it was not until her Dad passed away in 2004 that she became a full-time artist.

She was a WIRES volunteer for 17 years (particularly interested in Flying Foxes and Bats) and was one of the founding volunteer directors on the Katoomba & Upper Blue Mountains Bendigo Community Bank Branch which returns thousands of dollars every year to not-for-profit and community groups in the region.
