Benjamin Shine is a British born artist, designer and inventor. Following his studies in fashion design at Central St Martins in London (2001), Benjamin established his own creative studio dedicated to challenging perceptions through original constructional ideas and craftsmanship. Works to date encompasses fashion, furniture, product design, mixed-media artworks, installations and public sculpture.

Benjamin is most known for his tulle works, which centre on ideas of energy, impermanence, and the relationship between the spiritual and the superficial. Works have been exhibited and purchased by private collectors and arts institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Arts and Design New York, The Crafts Council UK and The London Design Museum. Clients and collaborations include Beyonce, Chloe x Halle, Givenchy, Maison Margiela, Bergdorf Goodman, Barclays Wealth, British Telecom, HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, The America’s Cup, Refinery 29, Google, Barnes and Noble and MTV.

Benjamin has won a number of awards including the Red Dot Design Award, The Enterprising Young Brit Award, The Arts and Entertainment Export Award in Australia and in 2017 he was listed as one of the 500 people shaping the fashion industry by the Business of Fashion. Videos of his work have amassed over 250 million views via publications including New York Magazine and The Huffington Post.

“I liked the idea of presenting these works together to demonstrate the very different creative opportunities afforded by the materials when manipulated. Whether that’s colour-mixing to ‘paint’ using tulle, creating dynamic pleated compositions using resin-infused felt, or achieving seemingly impossible folded forms in metal – it all emanates from the simple fold.”  – Benjamin Shine

Benjamin Shine makes his Sydney debut with 3FOLD showcasing three new bodies of work in contrasting materials and formats, alongside a small selection of Benjamin’s iconic Tulle works. While two Tulle pieces anchor the show as a bridge to his international reputation, the majority of the works have never before been publicly exhibited.

Bringing together three new and distinct bodies of work spanning metal sculptures, resin reliefs, and tulle ‘paintings’, the exhibition marks a significant evolution in Shine’s practice. This diverse group of works highlight the inventive constructional approaches that emerge from Shine’s fascination with material manipulation, transformation, and the creative potential of the fold.

The Exhibition will extend across three locations:

  • Art2Muse Gallery – Full Exhibition
  • The Sydney Intercontinental Hotel, 33 Cross St, Double Bay Sydney – Select Works
  • Fairfax & Roberts, Cnr King St and Sydney Arcade, Sydney – Select Works
