Biography

I have lived in many places and moved 23 times throughout my adult years. Although much of this has been transient I have absorbed many unique gems from my varied surroundings, along with the occasional rock which has usually managed to show me its own beauty in spite of itself.

As an artist, I remain continually on a search for the beauty to be found in the places and people I share my life with.

The last few years have happily bought me back to my home village of Balmain in Sydney. It is there that I stroll along my little streets with my two dogs, planning my morning coffee on the way to my studio.  It is during this time I am most passionately committed to daydreaming and become entirely too enthusiastic about the local architecture, history and the work of both old and new master painters as I plan my day of creativity.

Studios are like living rooms and bedrooms combined. One spends so many intense hours enclosed within the walls, it becomes both a home and emotional refuge. Mine also contains numerous eclectic treasures of absolutely no monetary value at all, that I collect and come to know intimately and yet discover anew on a daily basis.

I teach painting techniques and materials from my beloved studio to a selective number of students each week.

My painting is a visceral and emotional response to my surroundings and the images I collect and store within.

I spent my young life as a graphic artist and began my fine art career as a portrait painter, making no apologies for still being totally enamoured with the uniqueness of each individual face.  I still love to paint portraits but…the landscape has left me with an indescribable urge to explore it in all its achievements.

Pushing the boundaries between the real and imagined has become a new, but most likely long-lived attachment for me.  Most of my recent work is a combination of that.  It has become a journey towards a destination or place that I am at home with. Neither true, nor false, but something I have fallen in love with along the way.

When I finish a painting I want to be able to go in there and just exist. If I can do this then I am comfortable that the viewer will indeed be able to create their own unique dialogue. Then…and only then, I am happy!  In the end it has little to do with me, the artist, and everything to do with you, the person looking at my art. – Bronwyn Woodley Graham
