Can you tell us about your journey as an interior designer and what initially sparked your interest in this field?

My father was an engineer so growing up I saw him at the drawing board or on site solving complex issues. I also had an early fascination with form and colour so interior design was a good way to bring those artistic and functional aspects together. Studying interior design at university then amplified my interest into a lifelong passion. I’ve had my own studio specialising in residential interiors for 17 years now.

It is clear you have an appreciation for art and incorporate it into your designs, whether it be wallpaper, paintings or sculptures. How do you incorporate art into your projects, and how do you strike a balance between the art and the overall design scheme?

When embarking on a project we first consider the overall balance of the home: which areas need texture and rhythm, where might be best vantage points for hanging art, or where would the gravitas of sculpture punctuate the home with the most impact.  In the concept stage we then include “place holder” shapes in the ideal proportion so that we can keep our eyes peeled or consider commissioning suitable art pieces.  As the project develops and our knowledge of the client deepens, we gradually curate pieces for their consideration.  We also explore integrated “art alternatives” (custom marble slab compositions, wallpaper murals etc) as well as sculptural, expressive furniture pieces as part of the ultimate balance.

Each of your projects has a particular colour scheme, unique to the home. How do you select colour palettes for your projects? Does colour psychology play a role in your design process?

We often stay with a simple palette with one or two strong colours or a refined mix that delivers impactful, confident expression. We develop layered interiors but shy away from colour cacophonies. We like the eye to wander and be excited but not antagonised! Colour psychology is an educated, instinctual response to the existing home and the brief for its enhancement.  We use colour to manipulate the atmosphere of the home.

How do you create spaces that are not only visually appealing but also practical for everyday use?

Our designs are based on the demands of our client’s usage but rarely does that limit the visual appeal. The universe of materials and finishes, provides wildly exciting options for any use. Editing this universe to the optimum colours, patterns, fiber, feel, thickness, durability etc is how we prove our worth as designers.

Do you have any particular art styles that you find yourself drawn to when incorporating artwork into your designs? How do you adapt your design approach when working with different art styles?

Our design approach does not change according to art styles, the selections are made to elevate each project to another level. The interior style may intentionally contrast the art within it. Whether it’s the calm refined energy of a contemporary landscape or the loose rawness of more abstract works, the art can bring gentle ambience or irreverent attitude to the space.

How do you navigate differing tastes and preferences when it comes to selecting artwork for a project? How do you ensure that the chosen pieces resonate with both you as the designer and your clients?

Insight is key to navigating the most personal expression in our vision for the client.  On the design journey with our clients we accumulate glimpses into their personalities which is fascinating and rewarding. Good listening in every interaction with our clients unearths insight into their preferences. Interpreting this gathered understanding, we can curate art that exceeds their expectations.  The art is often the crowning glory of the home we create for our clients.
