“Colours are the smiles of nature” – Poet James Henry Leigh Hunt (1784 – 1859)
Surroundings and colour of destinations locally and abroad inspire me. My artworks emerge from constant surprising influences. My contemporary landscapes are naturally familiar and spontaneous. My aim is to stimulate on inspection and influence an individual’s personal interpretation. To bring about pleasure or discovery, that speaks to us all differently.
My approach and application is driven by the progress within my work. The paintings develop slowly, evolving through the grain of the board as well as the medium, producing compositions with depth and emotion. I moved to painting after a career as a Graphic Designer and see this as a strong influence in my artwork. I have been exhibiting successfully in Sydney, with many happy clients locally, abroad and commission based. My artworks are acrylic and charcoal on board framed.
Remote Immersion
This exhibition is a response to an amazing journey I had to the Northern Territory. It’s a very beautiful and harsh, yet vulnerable environment. There is so much concealed and spiritual within the land, leaving an intense sense of connection and mystery. The remoteness and history of the terrain and the indigenous people captivate and overwhelm all at once. Straight away, I knew painting what was before me was just not enough.
The outback has its strengths and weaknesses. These artworks challenge the obvious and embrace emotional reactions, working to express the exquisite rawness of the landscape and exposing unconscious actions and feelings.
Some of my paintings are more familiar, while others are spontaneous and an exploration of instinctive connection. Pushing my art to new areas of abstraction with expressive brush marks and lines to portray boundaries of wetlands, waterfalls and escarpments. Colour is laid in layers and concentrated to reveal interest, depth and discovery.
Remote Immersion is more the experience of a location, rather than representation. The intense colour, form and textures of these artworks encapsulates my state of new awareness of the journey within and my surroundings.
