Sally McDonald works in acrylic and resin to create vibrant, highly textural displays which feature overlays of metallic pigments and mixed media. Her colourful artworks have earned her a name for herself amongst interior designers and specialist design companies in Sydney. Sally specialises in commissioned works and has sold numerous large scale works throughout Australia.

Sally McDonald views the world around her as a revelation, through the context of colour, texture, movement, light and how she can translate emotions onto canvas and engage our senses. The Australian landscape is an ever-present inspiration for her work. She uses repetition and blurring of layers which help to re-create the landscape into a sense of order; building lineal seams overlaid with a 'birds-eye-view'.

After living in Sydney for 10 years, Sally now resides in her hometown of Newcastle.

Exhibition 'Patina'

Returning to Newcastle five years ago was part of my commitment to adopt a lifestyle that echoed a belief in living a richer life. Finding beauty in the rhythm of everyday and my desire to express this simplicity in paintings has been a recent focus and prompted this latest body of work.

Newcastle is a regional city full of contrasts- living alongside an urban industrial fringe that is punctuated with natural and accidental beauty affords me the advantage of immersing myself in appreciating the ‘everyday’ landscapes.

Living so close to the ocean, I am fascinated with the bloom of ‘erosion’ and the ever changing effects that weathering yields on our man made and natural spaces and places. Devoting attention to the ‘periphery’ of a landscape and highlighting the ‘spaces in between’ is an attempt to echo the beauty of the transient, the discarded, the forgotten and the overlooked.

Relying heavily on using ‘colour as form’ allows me to highlight and distort my abstractions of places seen and felt- my emotive response. Acrylic, ink, pigment and mixed media are vehicles of choice. Quick drying times are crucial as I rush to document layers. I blend lineal seams and cross sectional views that are repeated throughout the work; almost as a mantra- a cyclic and rhythmic play on the patina of transient beauty. Resin plays a role in ‘encapsulating’ landscapes- a momentary glance of ‘time’.
