Clark, son of the painter Tom Esplin, was born in St. Andrews, Scotland and came out to New Zealand with his family in 1955. Clark was educated at John McGlashan College, Dunedin, Dunedin Teachers - Training College and the University of Otago.
Clark has been an artist and art teacher since 1962. A member and former vice-president of the Otago Art Society, he first taught in Otago. Since 1976 he has lived in Christchurch, where he is a working life-member of the Canterbury Society of Arts.
His early watercolours were often of fishing boats and yachts in a free and strongly coloured style. Travelling widely in Europe, China and the Pacific, Clark is a respected and discerning artist, noted for his expert handling of the difficult watercolour medium. His work in both this technique and in acrylics has wide appeal and his work is highly sought after.
He has exhibited regularly in one-man exhibitions, and as guest artist at many important shows.
Artist Statement:
I am always looking - I choose from this huge plethora of material that I particularly like. I am editing all the time, rendering it down till I get something that I like. I am constantly sketching. Growing up in Scotland coloured my thinking. I relate to the European tradition of painting rather than landscape painting. I like to paint cityscapes, places and people.
