The ideas of Edmund Burke (1757) and Immanuel Kant on the sublime in nature have come to form the primary principals which underpin the development of my artistic process: nature represents the primeval element within the human psyche, and as an image and symbol continues to evoke strong emotional reactions within the human subconscious.

Nature can symbolize many things; purity, the ideal, the unknown, the universal, the spiritual or a lost state of perfection. Within the context of my own work, nature acts as the signifier for religious, philosophical and sociological discussions; discussions which attempt to emotionally engage the viewer to consider the issues and ideas which constantly plague both the individual and society. My work seeks to instigate an internal dialogue between the subject and the viewer which challenges the individuals notions and perceptions of reality, in the hope that this will stimulate wider social debate on the human condition in relation to its environment.

My work explores these ideas through various media, and my practice continues to be dictated by the approach that it is the idea that dictates the medium.
