Athena Xenakis who goes under AthenaX is a Sydney based artist with a Greek heritage. AthenaX was born in Australia in 1975, but was raised and educated in Athens, Greece before completing a Diploma in Fashion and Textile Design at ATCO Athens in 1995. After returning to Australia in 1997, she completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Sculpture Major) at The National Art School, Sydney in 1999. Since then, AthenaX has exhibited in numerous group and solo exhibitions while continuing to develop her artistic methodology and practice, as well as pursuing her interest in interiors through working on styling and consulting visual solution projects.
AthenaX’s philosophical and critical coherence, as artist; designer; stylist; and spiritual philosophical student, is that her single-minded conscientiousness (which has marked her actions in each of those incarnations) was formed during months spent creating these new works. The prevailing spirit, feeling, and atmosphere of creativity that arose during the making process, had implications beyond matters of metier and style.
In her practice AthenaX places herself under intuitive pressure to re-embody her former rhythms, to abstract and re-configure elements from past imagery and earlier works. Interrelations of remediated imagery, colour and shape, determine the spatial dynamics and compositions that she portrays. The visual effects and their affective impact, whether in her figurative or non-figurative works, is intentional.
AthenaX’s methodology to painting is her own unique modus operandi. Defining and evolving over the past nineteen years, she has mastered a simplistic yet complex technique of layering. All the complications within her abstract themed declarations are subtly yet powerfully concealed behind overlayed gauze.
